Shelter Veterinary Assistant

The Role
As a Veterinary Assistant on our Shelter Team, the core of your responsibilities revolves around keeping both the animals at our shelter animals happy and healthy. You'll be assisting in handling, providing care, treatment, medicating, record keeping and data entry of our shelter animals. General duties include:
- Entering and maintaining animal information in our PetPoint software
- Work with all departments regarding animal information
- Provide for the husbandry needs of the animals in the treatment room
- Assist the Shelter Medical Team in evaluating and treating animals. This includes performing physical exams, vaccinating, parasite checks, performing diagnostic tests, and medicating animals while under the supervision of the Shelter Veterinarian
- Prepare paperwork and medications on shelter animals needing treatment
Who are we looking for?
- Preferred:six months to one-year veterinary related experience and/or training
- Enthusiasm for the mission of the Humane Society of Charlotte and helping animals in our community
- Exceptional verbal and written skills, including clear and effective communication with others (staff, public, volunteers) that is professional, respectful, positive and educational
- High level ability to prioritize, organize and perform detailed tasks efficiently and with accuracy
- Must be willing to work flexible hours when needed
- Must have a reliable mode of transportation
- Must be comfortable interacting with dogs and cats

HSC has been a non-profit organization for over 45 years, then in 1982 we became the first low cost spay/neuter clinic to open in the southeast US. In 2022, HSC moved into our brand-new Animal Resource Center, and we are thrilled to have a new, state-of-the-art facility which allows us to be able to offer more comprehensive services to our community. As a result, in 2023 we were able to help over 3600 companion animals find new homes in the community and offer support to many others in our community.
