What you’ll do:
- Perform physical examinations and diagnostics to determine and evaluate health condition of animals at the time of admission, prior to adoption or presentation for surgery
- Provide routine and emergency medical care for a variety of sick and injured animals
- Perform high-volume, high-quality sterilization surgeries on dogs, cats, and rabbits, in addition to other surgical procedures (ex. ocular surgery, amputation and fracture repair, abdominal surgery, etc.). Medical cases consist of approximately 90% canine/feline and 10% exotics (small mammals and birds), large animal, and wildlife.
The resident will complete the requirements of the ABVP residency program, including completion of a research project and publication, visits to shelters regionally across the country, performing shelter consultations (in person and email/telephone), creating protocols, and external clinical rotations through HQHVSN clinics, emergency clinics, and specialty hospitals. The resident will spend approximately 7-weeks per year working on a research project relevant to shelter medicine under the mentorship of a faculty at WesternU College of Veterinary Medicine. The resident will also be required to assist with other shelter related activities such as philanthropy and community events, speaking and teaching seminars, monthly TNR clinics, mentorship, working with interns and extern students, and other activities at San Diego Humane Society.
What we’re looking for:
- Must have either completed a one (1) year shelter medicine internship, equivalent internship or have at least one (1) year experience as a licensed Veterinarian, preferably in an animal shelter.
- Experience with high volume surgeries and with herd health and/or large populations of animals is preferred.
- Must have a DVM/VMD degree and a veterinary license in state of CA by the start of the residency date.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
Location: Based at our San Diego Campus, with expected travel between all campuses and at Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) and various external sites, including likely travel outside of California. Residency dates are August 1, 2024 – August 1, 2027.
Pay: The starting salary is $73,216 annually.
