Description
Essential Function/Major Responsibilities:
- Implements and manages treatment plans and medical care for all animals under the guidance and direction of staff veterinarian, organizational medical protocols, Dept of Agriculture requirements, Medical Manager and veterinarian partners.
- Monitors the health of all animals housed in the Adoption Center on an ongoing basis and rapidly identifies any health concerns or conditions.
- Serves as one of the primary team members for administering and overseeing animal health checks, intakes, foster appointments, etc. Discusses animal health and treatment plans with adopters and foster parents.
- Acts as the primary team member to facilitate medical meets with adopters.
- Participates in paid, after hours on-call rotation, including nights and weekends.
- Assists the Medical Manager with providing trainings to staff, volunteers and foster parents.
- As part of the Animal Care and Support team, makes decisions regarding euthanasia of an animal when they are irremediably suffering or unsafe to adopt out.
- Humanely euthanizes animals due to medical or behavioral circumstances.
- In conjunction with the Medical Assistant, monitors the medical department email address and voicemail and ensures voicemails and emails are responded to promptly and effectively by the medical department.
- Participates in rotating onto the Mobile Spay/Neuter clinic as a surgical tech.
- Ensures the medical department is kept clean, sanitary and organized.
- Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
- Demonstrates understanding of and willingness to uphold Brother Wolf mission, vision and core values.
Qualifications:
- 2 years of prior experience working in the animal medical field, preferably in a shelter environment
- Familiarity with diseases common to dogs and cats
- Familiarity with preventive, therapeutic and diagnostic veterinary treatment of domestic animals.
- Knowledge of contemporary shelter medicine and clinic maintenance techniques and accepted sanitary practices.
- Rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.
- Comfortable making decisions in regard to euthanasia.
- Comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service skills.
- Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction.
- Maturity, excellent judgment, and a professional appearance.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Physical ability to walk and or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required. Ability to bend and squat.
- Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of legs, arms, and hands and to hear and see clearly.
- Physical ability to push up to 150lbs and to carry up to 50lbs regularly and independently throughout a regular workday required.
- Allergic conditions, which may be aggravated when handling or working with animals, may be a disqualification.
Working conditions:
Conditions may include working alone, working inside or outside during varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some evenings/weekends meetings and classes.
Educational Requirements:
- High school graduation required
- Euthanasia Technician Certification required to obtain within 90 days of start date. Brother Wolf will aid obtaining this certification.
- RVT license
Availability: The typical schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday with a total of 40 hours of work per week. Brother Wolf Animal Rescue is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year as animals need daily care.
