ASPCA Equine Fund
The ASPCA Equine Fund
ASPCA Equine Fund (AEF) offers lifesaving resources for equine rescues and sanctuaries. Through a combination of financial help, in-person and online training, and sharing of best practices, AEF works to improve the health and welfare of those saving the nation's horses.
The AEF provides grants to organizations across the country that work to reduce the suffering of equines at risk of hunger, homelessness and cruel slaughterhouse deaths. Additional funds are provided to humane organizations facing large-scale equine cruelty cases and natural disasters.
In 2014, the ASPCA provided more than $1.2 million to equine groups in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Grants are earmarked for programs focused on reducing suffering of horses, mules, donkeys, ponies and minis.
Read the general guidelines to see if your organization is eligible, and then learn about the grant application and approval process. ASPCA Grants Director Adam Liebling provides tips for first-time grant-seekers, and AEF Senior Director and equine grants officer Jacque Schultz shares how following through with grant requirements can set you up for success.

The Rescuing Racers Initiative, initially made possible by an anonymous donor, aids in the rescue of retired racehorses of all breeds. Instead of facing slaughter, more of these horses are rehabilitated and given a new lease on life.
In times of drought and devastating hay prices, the ASPCA has offered hay bale-outs. In 2011, the bale-out focused on Texas and Oklahoma. In 2012, the hay bale-out reached out to any part of the country where a square bale of hay cost more than eight dollars.

The AEF publishes the Nickerings e-newsletter with information on fundraising, model programs and best practices in equine rescue and rehabilitation.
The AEF cooperates with other equine resources that can also provide support and information. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries works at an international level to help equine rescues and sanctuaries improve animal care, obtain funding and connect with the larger animal protection community. The Homes for Horses Coalition is a collective of professionals working together to advance equine protection by promoting growth and professionalism in the equine protection community.
